Flooring installation in Coquitlam
Coquitlam splits into two kinds of flooring job. Burke Mountain and Westwood Plateau are mostly two-storey family homes built from the 1990s on, many still finished in builder-grade carpet that's now tired. The usual brief is a hard floor on the main level, the staircase done to match, and a decision about the bedrooms.
Maillardville, Austin Heights and Coquitlam West run much older, and there the work starts with what's already on the floor. Kitchens in these houses often have two or three floors stacked up. Every layer left in place raises the height, sometimes enough to trap the dishwasher under the counter or stop a door from clearing. Taking the old layers out keeps the new floor at a sensible height and shows what the subfloor is really like. In a house that age, have old sheet vinyl or vinyl floor tiles tested for asbestos before anyone disturbs them.
Either way, the free on-site measure is the time to look at all of it, so the quote covers the stairs, the trim and the old floor, not just the square footage.
The baseboard gap after carpet
Builders often set baseboards a little high so carpet and pad can tuck underneath. Pull the carpet and there's usually a gap under the trim that a thinner hard floor won't cover. There are two fixes: add a shoe moulding along the bottom, or take the baseboards off and set new ones down to the new floor. The trim also hides the expansion gap a floating floor needs at every wall, so it belongs in the quote from the start rather than as an afterthought.
Staircases on the Plateau
Many two-storey homes here have a carpeted staircase landing in the middle of the new floor, and worn carpet next to new laminate looks unfinished. Doing the stairs to match means covering each tread and riser, with a nosing made to match the floor. A square-edged nosing gives a clean, modern line. The nosing takes the most wear and it's the edge you see from below, so it's worth getting right. Order the stair material with the floor so the colours come from the same production run.
Keeping carpet in the bedrooms
Plenty of Coquitlam families put a hard floor downstairs and keep carpet upstairs. It's warmer, it's quieter over the rooms below, and it's easier on small kids. If the bedroom carpet is worn too, replacing it at the same time means the top of the stairs gets planned once, with the carpet edge and the last nosing finished to meet cleanly instead of patched together later.
